Crown & Bridge

What is a Dental Crown or a Tooth Crown?

A dental crown, also known as a tooth crown or dental cap, is a restorative dental treatment. It is essentially a custom-made, tooth-shaped cap that is placed over tooth to restore its shape, size and function.

Crowns are usually cemented or bonded to the tooth with the help of dental cement. Dental crowns are used in several cases such as:

  • To protect broken tooth.
  • In case of severe discoloration of tooth.
  • To cover the Dental Implant.
  • To hold a Dental Bridge in place.
  • When a tooth has extensive decay or a large filling.
  • In RCT treated tooth.

When do you need a Tooth Crown?

A dental crown treatment is recommended when a tooth is severely damaged, weakened, or decayed. Signs that indicate the need for a dental crown include visible cracks or fractures in a tooth, extensive cavities that can’t be addressed with a regular filling, or a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy. Dental crowns, or caps, serve a crucial role in restoring the tooth’s strength, functionality, and appearance, enhancing the aesthetics of your smile and preventing further damage or the risk of tooth fracture.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth with the support of adjacent natural teeth. It consists of one or more artificial (false) teeth and crowns for prepared natural teeth. The crowns are placed on the natural teeth adjacent to the gap or on dental implants.

When do you need a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridge treatment becomes necessary when you have missing teeth that affect your oral health and overall well-being. Dental bridge may be recommended due to following conditions:-

    1. After loss of teeth, food tends to get accumulated in the empty space, which may lead to decay of adjacent tooth. Replacement of teeth is therefore necessary for health of remaining natural teeth.
    2. After loss of tooth, the adjacent tooth may drift out of position and into the edentulous space.
    3. Other general factors like chewing food, speech and esthetics are also compromised due to loss of teeth.
    4. Dental bridge can be a suitable solution for individuals who are not candidates for dental implants or prefer a non-surgical option to replace missing teeth.

  3. Dental bridges play a role in enhancing your overall appearance. These are cosmetic solutions and blend well with adjacent natural teeth.
  4. They can be used to correct some bite issues as well.

Dental bridges are known to last many years. They can have a life span of over 10 years if proper care is taken. Dental bridges need extensive measures for maintenance of oral hygiene.
