Root Canal Treatment

What Is a Root Canal Treatment (RCT)?

Root canal or endodontic treatment is a dental procedure done to save the tooth when the pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected.

Which doctor is best for a root canal?

Endodontists are highly skilled dental specialists in diagnosing and treating tooth pain and performing root canal treatment.

When RCT is needed?

Subjective symptoms

  • When you have a toothache that won’t quit.
  • When you feel pain in your gums or are your gums swollen around a certain tooth.
  • When it hurts during eating or drinking something hot or cold.

Objective symptoms

  • When dental X-rays show that the pulp has been damaged by a bacterial infection due to variety of causes: long term dental sensitivity, deep decay, food lodgement in between teeth, faulty crowns, trauma or a crack or chip in the tooth.

What are the Steps or Procedure for RCT?

  • After administering local anesthesia an opening is made through the crown of the tooth.
  • All the decayed or infected tooth structure along with the pulp is removed.
  • Once the pulp is removed, the root canal is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and shaped. This process eliminates the infection and prevents its spread, ultimately saving the tooth from extraction.
  • After the cleaning and shaping, the empty root canals are filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, to seal off the space and prevent future infection.
  • In many cases, a dental crown is placed on top of the treated tooth to restore its strength and functionality.
